“Beauty crowds me till I die.” Emily Dickinson

Here are some of my favorite lines from my favorite poets–just to share and for the heck of it.  Poetry (the really good stuff) has always been my favorite genre as both a reader and writer.

The above line is from ED’s poem #1654 (Collected Poems). The rest of the stanza goes like this:

ed
Beauty crowds me till I die
Beauty mercy have on me
But if I expire today
Let it be in sight of thee --

w-b-yeatsYeats, the incomparable, is another fav of mine. He is so eloquent and eminently quotable.
Here's one for the ages: it refers to the grief that attends the death of love--

Murmur a little sadly, "how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And his his face among the stars."

from WHEN YOU ARE OLD, The Collected Poems of William Butler Yeats.

He's amazing--and a heart breaker.

This is heavy stuff, so here's just one more, for now, this one from Gerard Manley Hopkins, a magnificently gifted poet who happened to be a monk as well in 19th c. England. This is from CARRION COMFORT, Poems and Prose of Gerard Manley Hopkins.
He is lavishly gifted.

gerard-manley-hopkins
More pangs will, schooled at forepangs, wilder wring.
Comforter, where, where is your comforting?
Mary, mother of us, where is your relief?
My cries heave, herds-long; huddle in a main, a chief
Woe, wórld-sorrow; on an áge-old anvil wince and sing —
Then lull, then leave off. Fury had shrieked ‘No ling-
ering! Let me be fell: force I must be brief.”‘
O the mind, mind has mountains; cliffs of fall [fav line. bold type mine]
Frightful, sheer, no-man-fathomed. Hold them cheap
May who ne’er hung there. Nor does long our small
Durance deal with that steep or deep. Here! creep,
Wretch, under a comfort serves in a whirlwind: all
Life death does end and each day dies with sleep.
Wow. Dazzling dexterity with words and loaded to the breaking point with feeling, from Gerard Manley Hopkins: Poems and Prose
Anyway–haha-“beauty crowds me till I die!” I prefer to  laugh than cry!

Thanks for sharing these wise words Margaret. Oh how that WordPress can hinder our intentions. We’ve all certainly suffered our share of SNAFU’s with it. I write everything, books and blog posts in longhand. I begin revisions when entering my first drafts. Call me a dinosaur but I feel most creative with pen and paper, and many a time I ventured into writing blog posts straight into the computer and they virtually disappeared in cyber space halfway through a post. WordPress? Maybe, or computer issues, at least on paper I have the bones to start over, thoughts in tact. 🙂

PS I’m wondering if your ‘wonky’ WordPress isn’t pinging you back with the link I sent you, featuring you and your last post on editing. Here it is just in case: http://dgkayewriter.com/writer-good-copy-edit-great-advice-freelancers-union-margaret-langstaff/ 🙂

My pleasure Margaret. I know that WordPress can sometimes suck the patience out of me. 🙂

        • I think I messed it up when I increased my security levels to high last week. My bank account got hacked! Lost hundreds. Calling my nerd Mon. a.m. S.O.S. ! S.O.S.! MADAY MAYDAY!

Omg! That’s frightening! We are so darned vulnerable with our lives on these computers. 😦 I hope you sort it out, and possibly the bank will absorb the loss?

            • It is almost more trouble to go through the hassle of proving it to them and the authorities than sucking it up myself. I changed my passwords, cancelled cards and and am trying to transition to using cash and checks. For now I will not buy anything on or off line with cards. This is only going to become more prevalent. They can can get passwords off your phone and from the keystrokes for them on your computer keyboard. Nothing that happens on a computer is ever lost unless it is scrubbed and even then there is a usable residue. People better wise up, check bank and investment balances daily. Even the best encryption software is hackable. Times are changing. Sad, eh?

My goodness Margaret, everything is so frightening these days. So much of every day life is online. There have even been questioning conversations going on about starting voting for elections online. Now that would be lunacy. Truly so sad. 😦
